Fraud on the Rise: What Our Members Should Know
1 in 3 Irish adults have experienced fraud or a scam
Fraud and scams are becoming increasingly common, and new research shows just how widespread the issue has become.
According to recent findings from the Central Bank of Ireland, more than one in three adults in Ireland have experienced some form of fraud or scam. That’s a worrying figure, and a reminder that it can happen to anyone.
Some types of fraud are more common than others. Online purchase scams are the most reported, affecting 48% of victims. This is followed by debit and credit card fraud at 34%. Other scams include delivery service impersonation (15%) and phishing or email scams (13%). These are often linked to everyday activities like shopping online or receiving texts and emails, which makes them harder to spot.
For many people, the impact goes beyond inconvenience. A significant number of victims experience financial loss as a result of these scams.
Research from the Central Bank of Ireland also shows that 38% of victims don’t report fraud, often due to uncertainty or embarrassment. However, reporting quickly can improve the chances of recovering lost funds. At Progressive Credit Union, we urge our members to contact us straight away if they have even the slightest concern, acting quickly can make all the difference.
Staying informed is one of the best ways to protect yourself. Even small actions, like pausing before clicking a link or sharing personal details, can help reduce your risk.
